Why This Uses the Nearest NOAA Station, Not Your Address

NOAA measures at stations, not addresses

Climate normals are published per weather station, of which NOAA operates a few thousand nationally, not per city or per address. Every city on this site is matched to its nearest station on record, and that station's normals stand in for the whole city, which is accurate for most places but not identical to conditions at any one specific address, especially near a coastline, a mountain, or a large lake, where weather can change meaningfully within a few miles.

How far "nearest" usually is

Across all 4,876 cities in this dataset, the median distance to the matched station is 4.5 miles, and 90% of cities are within 11.5 miles of theirs. The farthest is Uvalde, TX, 34.4 miles from its nearest station in a sparsely-monitored part of Texas, an honest outlier this site reports rather than hides.

Every page names its own station

Rather than asserting a city-level number and leaving the source implicit, every page states the exact station name and its distance in miles, so a reader who lives somewhere unusual, on the far side of a mountain range from the named station, say, can judge for themselves whether that station's climate is likely to match their own block.
